There are various types of rocks in the Grand Canyon- after all it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and has an interesting geology and topography. The Grand Canyon is home to a number of mineral and valuable rocks and a lot of these are extracted from the Canyon so that they can be prepared and made more usable. You can find different types of rocks in the Grand Canyon- while some of these are precious, others are semi-precious rocks. The Grand Canyon is always being studied by geologist because it is so interesting and a large number of rocks can be found here.
Quartz is one of the many types of rocks in the Grand Canyon. Quartz is the second most abundant rock in the world and a large quantity of quartz rocks can be found in the Grand Canyon. Quartz is also used when constructing roads after it is crushed and it can also be used as flooring, on stairs and on roofs for decorative purposes.
Clay is another of the various types of rocks in the Grand Canyon which is used for different purposes- it is used to make concrete when mixed with cement sand and water and in some cases it may even be used to make pots or roads. Clay is used for road construction to smoothen out any sorts of sharp edges on the road and this minimizes the risks of cars’ getting punctured tires when traveling. It is also used as a barrier in landfills to prevent the seepage of toxic materials and for the removal of heavy metals from waste water to reduce pollution.
Calcite is one the many other types of rocks in the Grand Canyon. Efforts were made to use this rock to create the ‘cloak of invisibility’ and to repair concrete. It may even be used to hold soil together. Of the many types of rocks in the Grand Canyon there is shale. Shale is used to make a number of tools, some jewelry and it is also used to make cement. These rocks are even used in some power plants in some counties to generate electricity and to make bricks. It is formed from clay and is soft. It is grey in color and consists of petroleum as well. Other grains of crushed rocks such as quartz can be found in shale as well.
Then, you’ve got dolomite which can be found amongst other types of rocks in the Grand Canyon. It is used in particle detectors to make these efficient at finding the highest amount of exotic particles. Dolomite is also used as a magnesium source and to potting mixes and/or to the soil to neutralize the pH value of the soil.
These are just some of the many types of rocks in the Grand Canyon. Besides being a tourist hotspot the Grand Canyon is also something geologists and archaeologists take interest in particularly due to the various types of rocks in the Grand Canyon.
