Types Of Nonvascular Plants
Have you ever studied the biology of a plant? If you did you would have come across terms such as xylem and phloem- both are responsible for the production of foods in plants for photosynthesis. They aren’t so much involved in the process directly because what they do is that they transport water from the stem to the leaves so that the leaves can make their own food via photosynthesis. In the types of nonvascular plants that you would come across, there is no xylem, there is no phloem and the transportation of water to the leaves is done via more simplistic methods. There are various tissues that allow the types of nonvascular plants to make their own foods and they need not transport water to the leaves because they do not have leaves.
These types of nonvascular plants have the advantage of being able to get food directly by photosynthesizing their foods on their own rather than having to wait for the water to be transported to be able to do this. Algae are one of the many types of nonvascular plants that you would come across. These do not grow as ordinary vascular plants do.
Algae are one of the types of nonvascular plants that you could find anywhere that the water stands. These types of nonvascular plants prefer damp and moist places for growth and once they grow, they are able to make their own food. If you happen to notice algae, you would see that these grow at an accelerated rate because they are excellent at making their own food. They spread pretty fast and they use photosynthesis to make food. They are light to dark green in color which makes it easier for them to absorb the sunlight for the manufacture of their own foods.
Mosses are another of the many types of nonvascular plants that are commonly seen. Mosses are very soft plants and if you were to touch them, you would see that they feel like soft rubber. In some places you would be able to find moss colonies. Mosses like to live in damp to humid areas that are ideal for their growth. Generally you would see these types of nonvascular plants after a heavy shower and some of the can be found in areas with standing water. These, too, are green in color and you would usually see that they are parrot green in color. These types of nonvascular plants can make their own food the same way as algae are able to. In some cases you could even see the spores that allow the moss to spread. These types of nonvascular plants can either reproduce asexually or sexually.
If you would like to get rid of either of the types of nonvascular plants mentioned above you could limit the amounts of water they get and do not cover them because increased amounts of direct sunlight could cause them to die.
There are many other types of nonvascular plants as well.
