In technology, there are different types of network organisation. Of course, there are many different reasons why people use different computer systems and hence there are many different kinds of needs that should be catered. This is why there are different kinds of types of network organisation.
The LAN is the most common of all types of network organisation. LAN stands for Local Area Network. As the name implies, these are the types of network organisation that pertains to the connection of computers locally in a small space. A good example of this will be a computer system setup at home or in a classroom wherein there are different computers interconnected to each other.
The WAN is the second of the many types of network organisation. WAN stands for Wide Area Network. Here, the computers that are interconnected are of a wide area or large physical location. The best example of a WAN would be the internet, wherein the computers are able to connect to each other no matter where they may be around the world.
The WLAN is a variety of the LAN types of network organisation. WLAN stands for Wireless Local Area Network wherein a wireless network accessory is used to connect the computers that are in one small area. An example of this is a home that uses a wireless router. The router is the one that will wirelessly connect the computer devices to each other via WiFi.
The MAN is a variety of the WAN types of network organisation. MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network wherein the computers that are interconnected are found in a city or a metropolitan area, as the name implies. It is much larger than a LAN but definitely smaller than the internet. Most of the time, the MAN is owned by a single entity such as offices or government bodies.
The CAN is a combination of LAN and WAN types of network organisation. CAN stands for Campus Area Network wherein the computers that are interconnected are found in a campus or a school. It combines LAN and WAN as it connects the computers from a classroom to the other to the entire school or campus.
The SAN, lastly, can mean one of two different types of network organisation. SAN can stand for either a Storage Area Network or a System Area Network. A Storage Area Network is the interconnection of data channels to storage devices through a fiber channel. The System Area Network, on the other hand, is the fastest types of network organisation. It is defined as the interconnection of computers using high speed connections. The System Area Networks are known to be in cluster configuration as well. This is why most of the time System Area Networks can also be called as Cluster Area Networks. Also, a distinguishing factor about the system area networks is that they only connect high speed computers to each other. This is what guarantees them to all have high speed connections as they are able to share them to each other.
