Types Of Penguins

What are the different types of penguins? Penguins are such cute creatures. They are birds that cannot fly, but can swim. They have pretty much any other features that birds have – they have wings, beaks, feathers, and are warm blooded too. And like any other birds, there are a lot of types of penguins that are nice to get to know.

Among the types of penguins, the emperor penguins are the largest as they can stand up to 4 feet and weight around 80-90 pounds. The main characterizing features of the emperor penguin are their black eyes and feet, purple beak, and yellow patches on their head and breast. The king penguin is another one of the large types of penguins. They are known to be the most colorful of all the many different types of penguins. They are second to the emperor penguins when it comes to size as they can grow up to 3 feet and 40 pounds. The king penguins have a huge problem, though. They are hunted because there are some who make oil out of their blubber.

The rock hopper penguins are the most common crested penguins. Among the many types of penguins, the rock hopper penguins are the aggressive ones as they do attack some other penguins if they get bothered. They are small, however. They can grow only up to 20 inches and 10 pounds. The main characterizing features of the rock hopper are their orange beak and feet, red eyes, and their long and yellow feathers sticking out from the sides of their head.

The Gentoo penguins are the largest of the stiff tailed penguins. These are the types of penguins that swim really fast. They stand up to 32 inches and weighs somewhere around 15 – 20 pounds. Gentoo penguins are known for making nests. They are used to living in colonies, as well. Their females can lay two eggs at a time and both can survive to adulthood. The chinstrap penguins are another one of the stiff tailed penguins. Among all the type of penguins, the chinstrap penguins are the boldest as they will fight when they feel threatened. They can grow up to 30 inches and weight somewhere around 15 pounds. The third type of stiff tailed penguin is the Adelie penguin. Their distinctive characteristic would be their white eye ring that goes brighter during mating season. Among all the types of penguins, the Adelie are the highest jumpers as they are strong swimmers too.

Lastly, we have the little blue penguins. Among all the types of penguins, they are the smallest – therefore, they are also named fairy penguins. They can grow only up to 13 inches and weigh up to 4 pounds. The main characterizing features of the little blue penguins are their bluish gray back feathers, dark gray beak, and pink feet. Among all the many different types of penguins, the little blue are the ones that live where people are. You can find them somewhere around the southern shores of Australia and New Zealand. Because of this and their size, dogs, foxes and rats can be predators for the little blue penguins.
