What types of domestic violence are there? Domestic violence can be described in very many forms depending on the circumstances under which one finds him/herself a victim of all these circumstances. In this particular article we will highlight the most common types of domestic violence. Domestic violence can broadly be categorized as:

Physical violence

Sexual violence

Economic control

Psychological

Physical violence

These types of domestic violence refer to any action which is geared towards inflicting pain or physical injury. Some actions in this category include hitting, slapping, arm twisting, biting etc. Over the past few decades, women were being battered by men. Thing have since changed with a good number of men being beaten up by their wives. Physical violence is the most common form of domestic violence. Other examples under this category may include denying someone rights to access health services, forcing one to use drugs, denying the disabled access to a wheel chair etc. Other type of domestic violence is sexual violence. These types of domestic violence manifest themselves in very many forms. This may include coercing one to engage in sexual activities without her or his consent. This may include marital rape which so many women have been victims according to the recent reports. Other examples of sexual violence include forced rape, physical assault, forced prostitution, undermining victim’s sexual capability, accusation of infidelity among other factors which are not accepted by law.

Economic control

This is another form of domestic violence which has been an issue in most families as everyone tries to gain control of the total wealth of the family. It has been a very fertile ground for divorce. Variables which make up these types of domestic violence include denying an opportunity to get an employment or any source of income, withdrawing or selling property without the other party’s consent, forcefully having another person’s money, keeping all family bills which he/ she should be accountable for a secret etc. The psychological and emotional types of domestic violence only have a slight difference. Victims vulnerable to these types of domestic violence live in frustrations and at times they might commit suicide. Psychological domestic violence normally affects one’s mind and thus the general behaviour of a person. Examples of these types of domestic violence may include instilling some fear in somebody which may include threatening to harm someone physically, harassment, blackmailing someone, stalking someone be it through the phone, social media networks or through any medium used for communication.

It may also include isolating group of people e.g. isolating HIV victims is one of the worst types of domestic violence as they will remain to be psychologically disturbed. Other forms may be forced imprisonment or disrespecting one’s relationship.

Emotion domestic violence occur when one disrespects his/ her partners competence in doing certain duties, disrespecting other individuals’ feelings, inducing guilt or fear in an individual, not living up to the agreements or promises etc.

Although there are some other forms of domestic which do exist , the above list summarizes almost all the various possible types of domestic violence.
