Types Of Writing Modes
When we talk about types of writing modes, what come to people’s mind is screenplays, dramas, novels, poems, and short stories. However, one major determinant of quality writing is the ability to combine different writing forms for different purposes. Even if you are only specialized in one writing style, there are lots of benefits when you learn how to write in different writing styles. The following are the different types of writing modes for different writing needs.
1. Narrative writing: This is what is usually referred to as storytelling. Of all the types of writing modes, it can be the easiest to write because it comes natural to many people. We all love telling stories and people tend to enjoy writing stories than writing in other types of writing modes. Narrative writing must always begin clearly, and the middle and end must link very well. It is the type of writing that follows a chronological order. Examples of these types of writing modes include biographies, anecdotes, personal narratives, novels, and short stories.
2. Descriptive writing: Descriptive writing can be seen as the act of painting pictures with words. Using words to paint a picture means that you will be painting not only what you see but what you taste, smell, feel, and hear. The main reason for these types of writing modes is to be able to describe an event correctly to your audience in such a way it looks like they were at the event live. Apart from event, a descriptive writing can be written to describe other subjects and items. Generally, the writer should have a strong knowledge of what he or she is describing in order to make the audience understand them better. Many writers tend to add some narrative content into a descriptive work, but those that are purely description may be in form of photograph captions, character sketches, and some forms of advertisement.
3. Expository writing: These types of writing modes are undertaken to inform or explain. It is a writing style that is practical in nature. The writing style you are reading right now is an example of an expository writing. Other good examples expository writing include research papers, informative essays, instruction manuals, news reports, and encyclopedia entries.
4. Persuasive writing: These types of writing modes are intended to get the readers convinced to accept the writer’s views or opinions. They are the most difficult to write because of their strong demand for technical knowledge, logical thinking, strong convictions, and strong knowledge of the matter under discussion. Some good examples of this writing mode include movie or music reviews, advertisements, editorials, and literary essays.
Apart from these four types of writing modes, there are equally other subcategories of writing modes. But the above four are the most basic modes and all types of writing fall under one or more of these modes. There are equally different reasons for choosing a particular mode of writing. It could be to express emotions or strong feelings of love, to persuade someone to buy your product or service over the internet, or to pass an examination in English Language. Whatever the reason for deciding one mode of writing over the other, a mastery of all types of writing modes is very important.
