Types Of Rectal Tumors

There are several types of rectal tumors which are particularly named from the kind of cells they develop from. Some of the most common types of rectal tumors are:

Adenocarcinomas

This is the most diagnosed types of rectal tumors in the United States and other European nations. About 9 in 10 rectal cancers cases are adenocarcinomas. This type of rectal tumor always begin at the gland cells at the bowel’s lining. A signet ring tumor or a mucinous tumour is a good example of this type of cancer.

Squamous cell cancers

This type of rectal tumor is formed on cells that are composed of the lining of the bowel and the gland cells. They not as common as other types of rectal tumors but are given the same treatment as anal cancers.

Squamous cells are the skin like cells that make up the bowel lining, together with the gland cells. This type of bowel cancer is rare. They are treated the same way as anal cancers.

Carcinoid

They grow slowly and are equally known as neuroendocrine tumor. These types of rectal tumors are found in hormone producing tissues.

Mucinous tumours

These types of rectal tumors are always covered in mucus. The mucus usually pushes the nucleus (the cell’s control center) towards on direction, giving the tumor cells a signet ring shape when viewed with a microscope.

Mucinous tumors are very are and only about one or two percent of all cases of rectal tumors are Mucinous tumors. Their treatment is handled in the same manner as other types of rectal tumors.

Carcinoid tumours

This tumor is very unusual and grows slowly. These types of rectal tumors are found in hormone growing tissue, especially the digestive system. Carcinoid tumors are uncommon and are seen in about 4 to 15 percent of all rectal cancer cases. They are not treated the same way other types of rectal tumors are handled.

Sarcomas

They are cancers that affect the body’s supporting cells. These types of rectal tumors found in the rectum or colon are known as leiomyosarcomas. It means that these types of cancers usually begin at the smooth muscles. They are not treated the same way as leiomyosarcomas of the rectum or bowel.

Lymphomas

These types of cancers affect the lymphatic system. They are no very common and are present in 1 percent of all cancer cases. They are not treated the same way as other forms of rectal tumors.

The treatment associated with the different types of rectal cancer can either take the form of palliation or curation. The type of treatment method to adopt largely depends on the stage of the tumor and the patient’s preferences and state of health.

Surgery can be the ideal for of treatment for a rectal tumor that is diagnosed early. But when it is caught late after the appearance of metastases, surgery may not be advisable but the use of palliation methods. In this regard, the most ideal thing to do is trying to keep the patient as comfortable as canbe achieved.
