Types Of Animals That Are Tested On

Most of us do not realize this but different types of animals that are tested on are used to determine the effect of certain chemicals and products on our system. The cosmetic industry makes use of the various types of animals that are tested on quite frequently too and many groups that fight for the environment or are against animal cruelty are enraged by the fact that this happens. These types of animals that are tested on are also used by pharmacies or companies involved in the research and development of pharmaceutical products and medicines.

Rabbits are one of the types of animals that are tested on. They are often used for the Draize eye test. Certain chemicals are put into a rabbit’s eye to be able to measure how much irritation a chemical could cause. The problem with this is that a rabbit’s cornea is not as strong as a human’s. It produces less tears which means that such chemicals would cause more irritation and so it also lingers for longer in a rabbit’s eye. Such irritation can be torturous for these types of animals that are tested on and they may eventually go blind or die since they do not have strong immune systems.

Rats are also among the types of animals that are tested on nowadays. In fact rats are one of the animals that are used for quite a lot of tests. The cosmetic industry often makes creams, face wash and soaps after using on the different types of animals that are tested on for this very purpose. Again, the problem with these types of animals that are tested on and using these animals for such tests is that they are very different from human being and so the effect of these tests on these animals may be very different on us.

Soaps are also used on different types of animals that are tested on to see the effect chemicals in a type of soap would have upon the animal. Some of the fur of the animal is shaved off and the soap is applied on to this shaved patch to study the rate of absorption of chemicals and to test whether or not these chemicals would get absorbed at all by the animal. If they do not get absorbed, then, it is likely that a company will make and sell such products in the market.

The types of animals that are tested on are usually small and harmless creatures like mice, rabbits and such like. This is because they can’t attack, are small and they are easy to find as well. Other types of animals that are tested on aren’t exactly animals but they are insects. Recently the outbreak of the dengue virus led to many scientists using mosquitoes so that the mosquitoes which were infected themselves by the virus could be ‘cured’ and so that they wouldn’t be able to transmit the virus to humans.

So while there are different types of animals that are tested on, insects can be used for some tests too.
